Why Iskolarium?
The name Iskoliarium was derived from spoliarium, the hall in which defeated gladiators are stripped of their armor. Spolarium is also the name given by Juan Luna to his masterpiece which depicts a group of people watching dead gladiators being dragged across the floor. The painting served as a call for Filipinos to join the reform movement. It was described as a “cold and honest depiction of inhumanity and the strength of the human spirit in those that live on.”
Like the Spolarium, Iskoliarium is the masterpiece of the J121 FWX class. It symbolizes the choice we UP students or mga Iskolar ng Bayan are faced with everyday-- to be passive spectators to injustices around us or to heed the call to take action in whatever way we can. The Ispolarium staff chooses to take action by delivering news in a form and style that is different from other student publications.
